A great deal of Britain's heritage and local history is to be found in its taverns and inns which, over the centuries, have formed a central part of life in both town and country. Inns offered a welcome to the local and the stranger, a staging post for coaches, and sustenance and rest for travellers and horses alike. As this book shows, a great many inns chose the special and easily recognisable name "The White Horse" - a reflection perhaps, of the high esteem in which white horses have always been held in this country.
Araminta Aldington and Sally Potter have compiled an historical vignette of White Horse inns of Britain and the Republic of Ireland in this remarkable gazetteer. They have researched the history of over 1600 buildings, their owners, and those who visited them. Many characters are to be found meeting or drinking in their 'local' White Horse inn, and while writing about them, the authors regale the reader with a fascinating variety of incidents and facts, many of which have passed into folk lore.
