William Russell has used the minutes books of Masonic Lodge St Duthus at Tain to produce an interesting local history. Apart from the events of the Lodge, itself all meticulously recorded, it forms a unique account of the goings-on in the area. Starting not long after Bonnie Prince Charlie had left these shores for permanent exile, this volume sees Ross-shire develop from a remote area with few roads and little infrastructure into a community complete with business interests. Poverty and the problems of the area were all tackled by the Lodge and its members made an important individual contribution to the well-being of the community, which endures to this day.
